Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

In 2014, Nigeria was one of only three countries worldwide where cases of polio still occured. However, the country recently marked one year without a recorded case of polio. This is the first step towards Nigeria being declared free of the infectious disease. The virus that causes polio is found in the saliva and faeces of an infected people. It can be spread by direct contact with these people, through the air when they cough, sneeze or talk, or through food, water or hands that are contaminated with infected faeces. Most people suffering from polio have no symptoms and do not even realize that they are ill. In a small number of cases (1 out of every 200), there is permanent paralysis, usually of the legs. Occasionally, the patient's breathing muscles are affected and the patient dies. People can be infected at any age, but children under the age of five are most vulnerable. There is no cure for polio, but it can be prevented by vaccination. The only way to rid a nation of the disease is to ensure that every child is vaccinated. The drive to eradicate the disease in Nigeria was hampered by a vaccination ban in some of the Northern states in 2003 and 2004. The ban was implemented by state governors who believed that the vaccine was not safe. However, the ban was eventually lifted and the vaccination programme continued. The results are visible today.
