The teachers play a very important role in the life of learners. Once the learner is admitted to a school, it is the teacher that is given the responsibility of imparting, not only the knowledge he needs to succeed in his examination, but also the good morals he needs to be a good citizen of a society. Teachers therefore deserve high regard and respect. Quite unfortunately, not many learners give drespect to their teachers. Even the society that we live in LOOKS DOWN ON TEACHERS. Teachers do all they can to impart knowledge in their learners. They look for ways of making sure that the learners understand what they are taught. The success of the learners is their major concern. Teachers serve as parents of the learners when they are in school. They look after the learners to ensure that they learn effectively. Should a learner show signs of illness, teachers take prompt actions to care for him, if necessary, give him or her first aid treatment. The joy of any teacher is to see the learner succeed. Are these efforts really APPRECIATED? I remember quite VIVIDLY an ugly incident that happened on a particular Tuesday afternoon. A group of students decided to waylay the principal of our school. They gave him the beating of his life. This was a man who had always treated the students as his own children. Indeed, he fondly called them "my children". Why did they do this? The mathematics teacher had reported them to the principal for not doing their mathematics assignment, so the principal punishment them. That was his 'offence'. The students, thus bit the hand that fed them. News of this ugly incident spread like wild fire in the harmattan. The following week, the Board of Governors held a meeting to deal with the ungrateful students. The principal, in the usual kind manner, begged for the students not to be expelled and that they be asked to merely apologize. But then, is that the end of the matter? After all in our African culture, nobody has ever beaten his elders and made in life
